Medical Ear Piercing
At Stowe Farm Pediatrics, we utilize - and love! - the Blomdahl medical ear piercing system, available only to physicians and nurses.
Blomdahl is a Swedish company that has designed a sterile piercing process that causes minimal tissue trauma and utilizes only medical-grade titanium and medical-grade plastic earrings for piercing. The earrings are sterile and hypoallergenic, avoiding the common problem of irritation and allergic reactions to nickel and other “filler” metals commonly found in jewelry. The earrings are designed to facilitate good air flow and healing, and the modern aseptic design of the piercing instrument and earring cartridges significantly reduces the risk of infection.
You do not need to be a patient at Stowe Farm Pediatrics.
Piercing is available for both children and adults.
At this time, we are only piercing earlobes.

The Blomdahl piercing system offers a number of benefits.
First, it provides true medical-grade sterility. Blomdahl uses a fully enclosed, sterile, single-use cartridge system. Earrings and clasp are pre-sterilized and never touched by hands This eliminates cross-contamination risk from reused instruments, improper needle handling, and non-sterile jewelry insertion after piercing.
Second, the Blomdahl system was designed specifically for children, and engineered for pediatric anatomy and compliance. It offers:
Controlled, rapid motion → less tissue trauma
Short, sharp medical stud → minimal tearing
Predictable depth and angle → consistent outcomes
Very brief procedure → reduced anxiety and movement
Finally, Blomdahl minimizes infection risk by creating a clean puncture (not tearing); using sterile, biocompatible studs; and providing standardized aftercare protocols.

Traditional spring-loaded piercing guns can cause tissue compression and tearing. The medical Blomdahl system we use is not a traditional gun - it uses a controlled, sterile mechanism designed to create a clean puncture, similar in outcome to a needle but with greater consistency in children.
-
Needle piercing can be safe in experienced hands, but it also relies heavily on technique, environment, jewelry handling, and patient cooperation. In pediatric care, we choose the option with the fewest variables and highest consistency.
We exclusively use the Blomdahl medical ear-piercing system because it offers:
Sterile, single-use cartridges (no instrument reuse)
Hypoallergenic medical-grade jewelry (nickel-free)
A fast, controlled procedure that minimizes tissue trauma
Less handling of the ear, which lowers infection risk
Better tolerance for infants and young children
For pediatric patients, especially babies and toddlers, this approach aligns best with medical safety standards.
We also provide a warm, comfortable, clean, and private environment for piercing, as many families are not comfortable in a piercing parlor/tattoo studio environment.

No! We provide the earrings used for piercing. We have a number of different styles you can choose from. Blomdahl earrings are made from medical-grade plastic or titanium, and they are nickel-free, compliant with EU and medical standards.
