Aftercare Recommendations

1. Always wash your hands before touching your ears. Try to avoid unnecessary touching.

2. Clean your newly pierced ears on both sides of the earlobe twice daily with the aftercare wipes provided. When those run out, please continue to clean your ears twice daily for 4-6 weeks.

You can use soap and water (preferably a mild, fragrance-free cleanser), or you can purchase a piercing aftercare sterile saline spray (such as the NeilMed piercing aftercare fine mist) if desired. I do not recommend cleaning with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide as these are very harsh and can interfere with your body’s natural tissue healing process.

3. I recommend avoiding swimming, especially in lake or ocean water, for 72 hours at a minimum but preferably for at least 2 weeks.

4. Please cover your ears if applying sprays to your face or head (e.g. sunscreen, perfume) so that the new piercings do not become irritated.

5. Be very careful when putting clothing on or removing, to prevent earrings from getting caught or pulled.

6. Avoid wearing heavy earrings for the first year, as this can lead to elongation of the hole and earlobe.

7. Piercing studs can be removed after 6-8 weeks, though some prefer to wait slightly longer. When you remove the piercing studs, immediately place new earrings into the hole. Do not leave ears without earrings for long periods of time (including overnight) for the first year, to prevent the hole from closing.

8. Always clean earrings and earlobe prior to putting in a new earring.

9. Low-quality earrings, and earrings that include nickel and certain other metals/ingredients, can cause contact irritation/allergy symptoms. Nickel is commonly found in white gold and can be present in sterling silver as well. I recommend hypoallergenic earrings; medical-grade titanium and plastic are typically very safe choices.
